Rear disc brakes (Honda Civic 7)

Examination

1. Check the axial runout of the brake disc.

a) Secure the brake disc by installing washers (A) and tightening the wheel nuts (B).

b) Install the dial indicator (C) as shown in the figure.



c) Rotate the brake disc and measure the axial runout of the disc at the outer edge of the disc surface that contacts the brake pads.

Maximum axial runout - 0.1 mm

If the disc runout is not within the norm, check the preload of the hub bearing and the bearing itself. Adjust the preload if necessary.

2. Check the thickness and uniformity of wear of the brake disc.

a) Clean the surface of the brake disc that contacts the brake pads.

b) Using a micrometer, measure the thickness of the brake disc at a distance of approximately 10 mm from the edge of the disc every 45°.

Nominal thickness - 9.0 mm

Minimum allowable thickness is 8.0 mm



c) Subtract the minimum measured value from the maximum.



Maximum measurement difference is 0.015 mm

If the brake disc is worn unevenly (the difference in measurements exceeds the maximum permissible value), sharpen or replace the brake disc.

If the brake disc thickness is less than the minimum allowable, replace the brake disc.

3. Check the thickness of the brake shoe linings.

a) Jack up the rear of the car and place it on stands,

b) Remove the wheels.

c) Check the thickness of the inner and outer brake shoe linings.

Standard thickness - 9.0 mm

Minimum thickness - 1.6 mm



d) Replace the brake pads as a set (right and left side at the same time), if at least one of the pad linings has a minimum or lesser thickness.

Replacing brake pads

1. Release the parking brake.

2. Remove the retainer and disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake actuator lever.



3. Loosen the bolt and remove the brake hose from the bracket.



4. While holding the guide pin with a wrench, loosen the bolts and remove the brake caliper.

5. Remove the brake pads and linings.



6. Remove the retaining plate inserts (A).





7. Clean the caliper bracket (B) from dirt and foreign objects.

6. Apply special brake grease to the surfaces of the pads (A) and linings (B) as shown in the figure.



7. Install the brake pads and linings.

Note: The brake pad wear indicator (C) on the inner pad should be at the bottom.

8. Turning the piston in the cylinder counterclockwise, set the piston in such a position that when installed, the protrusion on the inner brake shoe coincides with the recess in the piston.



9. Install the brake caliper and tighten the caliper mounting bolts.



Tightening torque: 23 Nm

10. Install the brake hose and tighten the bolt.

Tightening torque: 22 Nm

11. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake actuator lever and install the lock.

12. Press the brake pedal several times to force the piston against the brake pad.

13. Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir and top up if necessary.

14. Check that there are no brake fluid leaks and that the brake hoses are not rubbing against other parts.

Support

Removal

1. Release the parking brake.

2. Remove the retainer and disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake actuator lever.



3. Loosen the bolt and remove the brake hose from the bracket.



4. While holding the guide pin with a wrench, loosen the bolts and remove the brake caliper.



5. Loosen the bypass bolt, disconnect the brake hose and remove the sealing washers.



6. Remove the guide pins and dust boots.

Disassembly and assembly

1. Remove the spring.



2. Install the special tool on the piston and, turning it counterclockwise, remove the piston and dust cover.



3. Remove the piston cuff.



4. Install the special tool into the caliper cylinder as shown in the figure.



5. Install the plate so that the special tool plate rests against the caliper, then tighten the nuts.

6. Turn the special tool nut 0.25-0.5 turns to the right to compress the regulator spring "B".



7. Using a special tool, remove the retaining ring.

8. While holding the lower nut of the special tool, tighten the upper nut to secure the position.

9. Remove the special tool, spring seat (C), adjuster spring (B), spacer (D), bearing (A), adjusting bolt (E) and cap (F).



10. Remove the bushing (A), pin (B) and O-ring (C).



11. Remove the return spring and the parking brake actuator lever assembly with the lever shaft.

Note: Do not remove the nut without removing the parking brake lever from the caliper. Remove the lever, clamp it in a vice, and then remove the nut.

12. Remove the parking brake lever shaft boot.

Note:

- Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

- When installing:

• apply special brake grease to the sealing cuff (A) and dust boot (B);
• apply brake fluid to the piston.

Installation

1. Apply grease to the boot, guide pin and caliper bore. Install the boot and guide pin.



2. Install the brake pads (the installation procedure is described in the subsection "Replacing the brake pads").

3. Install the brake caliper. Hold the guide pin with a wrench and tighten the bolts:

Tightening torque: 23 Nm



4. Connect the brake hose to the caliper, install the washers and tighten the bypass bolt.

Tightening torque - 34 Nm

5. Bleed the brake system (see section "Bleeding the brake system").
