Examination



1. Checking the thickness of the brake shoe linings.

a) Remove the brake drums.

b) Check the thickness of the brake shoe linings.

Nominal thickness:
  • sedan - 4.0 mm
  • hatchback - 4.5 mm

Minimum thickness of the overlay is 2.0 mm

Replace brake pads if necessary.

Note: Replace brake pads as a set (right and left side at the same time), if at least one of the pad linings has a minimum or lesser thickness.


2. Checking the brake drum.

a) Measure the inner diameter of the brake drum.

Nominal diameter:
  • sedan - 200.0 mm
  • hatchback - 220.0 mm

Maximum allowable diameter:
  • sedan - 201.0 mm
  • hatchback - 221.0 mm

b) Check the inner surface of the drum for cracks, unevenness and uneven surface wear.



c) If necessary, repair or replace the drum. Drums with only minor defects can be repaired.

d) When repairing or replacing the drum, check the tightness of the brake shoes. Apply chalk to the working surface of the drum and check the tightness of the shoes.

Replacing brake pads



1. Remove the brake drum (see subsection "Removal and installation").

2. (Hatchback) Using the special tool, disconnect the upper return spring from the rear brake shoe.

8. Remove the retainer (A) and washer (B), then remove the lever shaft (C) and remove the parking brake lever (D) from the brake shoe (E).

9. Replace the brake pads with new ones.

10. Apply special brake lubricant to the surfaces shown in the figure.

11. Install the parking brake lever (A) onto the brake shoe, install the pin (B) and washer (C). Install the new retainer (D) and tighten it with pliers.

13. (Sedan) Install the adjusting lever and connect the spring to the front brake shoe.

15. (Hatchback) Install the adjuster arms onto the adjusting bolt, then install spring "A" onto the adjuster assembly. Install spring "B".

16. Apply special brake lubricant to the areas shown in the figure.

  • Remove excess grease.
  • Avoid getting grease on the brake pads.

17. Install the brake pads on the brake shield and install the spring "B".
