Warning! If the battery is not properly handled or observed while starting the engine, it may explode, causing serious injury to bystanders.
Keep sparkling objects, open flames, lighted matches and burning cigarettes away from the battery.
To start the engine from an external battery, perform the following operations.
Open the hood and check the condition of the battery. At a low negative ambient temperature, check the condition of the electrolyte in the battery. If ice crystals are floating in the electrolyte or it is covered with an ice crust, do not attempt to start the engine until the electrolyte has completely thawed.
Attention! If the battery is stored in freezing temperatures, the electrolyte in the battery may freeze. When trying to start the engine, the case of a frozen battery may burst.
Turn off all electrical consumers: climate control system, audio system, lighting devices, etc. Move the manual transmission range shift lever to neutral and apply the parking brake.
The sequence of connecting cables is indicated in the illustrations by numbers.
Attach one of the clamps «positive» extension cable to positive (+) terminal of a dead car battery. Connect the second clamp of this cable to the positive (+) terminal of the external battery.
Attach one of the clips of the second extension cable («negative») to negative (-) terminal of the external battery. Connect the second clamp of this cable to the terminal «mass» wires (see picture). Do not attach the second cable clamp to other parts of the engine.
For vehicles with diesel engines Attach one of the clips of the second extension cable («negative») to negative (-) terminal of the external battery. Connect the second clamp of this cable to the threaded stud on the side of the motor (see picture). Do not attach the second cable clamp to other parts of the engine.
If the battery of another vehicle is used as the external battery, have an assistant start the engine of that vehicle and set the idle speed to high.
Turn on the car's starter and try to start the engine. If the starter still cranks the engine slowly, check the electrical connections of the extension cables for loose connections.
After the engine has successfully started, disconnect the clamp «negative» extension cable from the car engine, then the second clamp of this cable - from the negative terminal of the external battery. Disconnect the clamp of the remaining extension cable («positive») from the positive terminal of the car battery, then the second clamp of this cable - from the positive terminal of the external battery.
When disconnecting cables, be careful not to short the bare sections of one cable to another cable or to any metal parts of the vehicle. Otherwise, a short circuit is possible.
