In the models under consideration, the crankshaft position sensor structurally consists of three parts, which monitor, respectively, the actual position of the shaft, the position of the engine TDC (tDC sensor) and the position of the piston of cylinder No.1 (cYP sensor). Based on the data received from the CKP sensor, the ECM/PCM determines the fuel injection and ignition timing in each of the engine cylinders; in parallel, the sensor supplies the control module with information about the engine speed. The signals from the TDC sensor determine the correct setting of the ignition timing when starting the engine. The CYP sensor informs the control module about the readiness of each of the cylinders for fuel injection. All three sensors are combined into a single assembly, which is installed inside the ignition distributor. Diagnostics of sensor faults is performed using the ECM/PCM memory data reader (see On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) System - Operating Principle and Error Codes) and measuring the resistance between the corresponding terminals of the assembly wiring connector.

SKRB sensor



SKRB sensor


1. To check the CKP sensor, disconnect the electrical connector on the ignition distributor and measure the resistance between terminals 2 and 6 in it (see accompanying illustration). Compare the measurement result with the requirements Specifications.



2. Check terminals 2 and 6 for continuity to ground – there SHOULD NOT be continuity, otherwise replace the distributor assembly (see Chapter Engine electrical equipment).

3. If you cannot identify the cause of the problem, take the vehicle to a service station for more detailed diagnostics.

TDC sensor



1. To check the sensor, disconnect the electrical connector on the ignition distributor and measure the resistance between terminals 3 and 7 in it (see illustration above). Compare the measurement results with the requirements Specifications.

2. Check terminals 3 and 7 for continuity to ground – there SHOULD NOT be continuity, otherwise replace the distributor assembly (see Chapter Engine electrical equipment).

3. If you cannot identify the cause of the problem, take the vehicle to a service station for more detailed diagnostics.

CYP sensor



1. To check the sensor, disconnect the electrical connector on the ignition distributor and measure the resistance between terminals 4 and 8 in it (see illustration above). Compare the measurement results with the requirements Specifications.

2. Check terminals 4 and 8 for continuity to ground – there SHOULD NOT be continuity, otherwise replace the distributor assembly (see Chapter Engine electrical equipment).

3. If you cannot identify the cause of the problem, take the vehicle to a service station for more detailed diagnostics.
