Removal

1. Remove the drive shaft mounting nut (see Chapter 8A). Loosen the wheel nuts, lift the car and place it on stands. Remove the wheel.

2. Disconnect the brake hose from the strut and steering knuckle. Unscrew the brake caliper mounting bolts, move it to the side and hang it on a wire. Remove the guide and dismantle the brake disc (see Chapter 9).

3. Disconnect the transverse rod from the steering knuckle (see section 25).

4. On 1984-1987 models, remove the torque arm ball joint from the steering knuckle (see section 7). On 1988 and later models, remove the lower control arm from the ball joint at the bottom of the steering knuckle (see section 11).

5. On 1984-1987 models, remove the pinch bolt from the top end of the knuckle (see fig. 2.3) and with light blows on the fist and hub, remove the lower end of the strut.

6. On 1988 and later models, remove the upper end of the knuckle from the upper ball joint arm (see section 12).

7. Carefully pull out the steering knuckle and hub. Support the drive axle, then secure it to avoid damaging the inner CV joint.

8. Repair of the hub and steering knuckle requires special equipment, so leave this to service station employees.

Installation

9. Apply a small amount of wheel bearing grease to the splines of the drive shaft. Insert the splined end of the shaft into the hub before installing the steering knuckle in place.

10. On 1984-1987 models, connect the upper end of the knuckle to the lower end of the strut, making sure to align the strut tab with the knuckle slot (see section 2). Install the tie bolt and tighten it to the torque specified in the specification.

11. On 1988 and later models, connect the upper end of the knuckle to the upper control arm ball joint (see section 12). Tighten the ball stud nut to the torque specified in the specification.

12. On 1984-1987 models, connect the lower end of the knuckle to the torque arm ball joint (see section 7). On models produced since 1988, connect the ball joint from the bottom of the knuckles to the lower arm (see section 11).

13. Install the brake disc, pad guide and caliper (see Chapter 9). Connect the brake hose.

14. Install the hub mounting nut and tighten it.

15. Install the wheels and wheel nuts, lower the vehicle. Tighten the wheel nuts.

16. Tighten the drive shaft nut to the torque specified in specifications for Chapter 8A.

17. Check the wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.
