Removal
1. Remove the wheel caps. Using a large pry bar, loosen the wheel hub nut.
Note: On some models the hub nut is secured against turning with a lock washer. Loosen the wheel nuts, lift the vehicle and place it on stands. Remove the front wheels.
2. Remove the hub nut. To prevent the hub from rotating, insert a tire iron between the two nuts.
3. Drain the oil from the box (see Chapter 1).
4. On 1988 and later models, the damper fork must be removed from the shock absorber assembly and lower arm.
5. Remove the lower link from the steering knuckle (see Chapter 10).
6. While rocking the knuckle/hub assembly, pull it out until the end of the drive shaft comes out of the hub. Tie off the outer end of the drive shaft.

7. When removing the drive shaft from a 4x2 or the right axle of a 4WD vehicle, carefully pry the inner end of the axle with a large screwdriver, positioning it between the transmission housing and the CV joint housing. While supporting the CV joint, carefully remove the drive shaft.

8. When removing the left drive shaft of a four-wheel drive vehicle, place a screwdriver between the intermediate shaft bearing support and the inner CV joint and pry the joint until you hear the characteristic sound of the intermediate shaft retaining ring coming out. To prevent damage to the intermediate shaft seal, keep the CV joint in a horizontal position until the axle has completely come out of the intermediate shaft.
Installation
9. Remove the old snap ring from the inner end of the drive shaft and install a new one. Lubricate the differential seal with multi-purpose grease.
10. When installing 4x2 and right-hand drive 4WD vehicles, insert the splined end of the inner CV joint into the differential side gear and press it down. Make sure the snap ring fits into the gear groove.

11. Apply a small amount of grease to the outer CV joint splines, then the steering knuckle/strut and install the drive shaft into the hub.
12. Insert the lower arm pin into the steering knuckle and tighten the nut (see Chapter 10). Use only a new cotter pin.
13. Install and tighten the hub nut. Finally tighten the nut to the recommended torque when the vehicle is on the ground.
14. Pull the inner CV joint cover (not by the axle!) and make sure the drive is securely seated.
15. Install the wheels, nuts and lower the vehicle.
16. Tighten the wheel and hub nuts. Lock the hub nut in the groove.
