Note. The procedure described below is applicable to most of the vehicle models covered in this manual. However, if the data on the VECI label differs from the information below, follow the VECI instructions.
1. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
2. With the ignition off, look for the VECI label under the hood and carefully read the instructions on ignition timing. Of particular importance is the correct setting of the idle speed, since the engine speed is directly related to the ignition timing. Prepare all the necessary tools (see accompanying illustration):
1. Vacuum plugs – All detachable vacuum hoses must be plugged immediately. For this purpose, plugs of various sizes and configurations are produced.
2. Stroboscope with inductive connection - Provides a pulsation of a bright, highly directional beam, synchronized with the moments of sparking on the electrodes of the spark plug of the first cylinder. Connect to the BB wire of the spark plug of the first cylinder according to the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Special wrench - On some models, access to the distributor clamping bolt is limited and its release using a conventional key is extremely difficult.
3. With the ignition off, connect the stroboscope according to the manufacturers instructions. The stroboscope is usually powered by an on-board battery. The receiving inductive lamp sensor is installed on the BB wire of the spark plug of the first cylinder (on all models, the cylinder count starts from the drive belt).
4. Look for alignment marks on the front cover and crankshaft pulley (see accompanying illustration).
5. Locate the 2-pin service connector under the car's front passenger door sill trim (see accompanying illustration). With the ignition off, connect the connector pins with a jumper wire.
6. Start the engine warmed up to normal working temperature and direct a stroboscope beam to the pointer on a forward cover of the engine.
7. Appropriate (see VECI label) of the crankshaft pulley marks illuminated by the strobe beam, remaining motionless, should be aligned with the pointer on the cover.
8. If necessary, loosen the three fixing bolts and correct the position of the distributor body, achieving the correct alignment of the marks.
9. Tighten the bolts and recheck. Make sure that the engine idle speed has not changed.
10. Stop the engine and remove the stroboscope.
11. Replace the inspection plug and remove the jumper wire from the service connector.
