Note: The procedure described below applies to most vehicle models covered in this manual. However, if the VECI label data differs from the following, follow the VECI instructions.
1. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
2. With the ignition off, locate the VECI label under the hood and carefully read the instructions on the ignition timing. It is especially important to set the idle speed correctly, as the engine speed is directly related to the ignition timing. Prepare all the necessary tools (see accompanying illustration):
1. Vacuum plugs – All disconnected vacuum hoses must be sealed immediately. Plugs of various sizes and configurations are available for this purpose.
2. Stroboscope with inductive connection - Provides a bright, highly focused beam of light pulsating, synchronized with the sparking moments on the spark plug electrodes of the first cylinder. Connects to the high-voltage wire of the spark plug of the first cylinder in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions.
3. Special wrench – On some models, access to the distributor clamp bolt is limited and loosening it using a standard key becomes extremely difficult.
3. With the ignition off, connect the stroboscope in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. The stroboscope is usually powered by the on-board battery. The receiving inductive sensor of the lamp is installed on the high-voltage wire of the spark plug of the first cylinder (on all models, the cylinder count starts from the drive belt).

4. Locate the timing marks on the front cover and crankshaft pulley (see accompanying illustration).

5. Locate the 2-pin service connector under the front passenger door sill trim of the vehicle (see accompanying illustration). With the ignition off, connect the connector contacts together with a jumper wire.
6. Start the engine at normal operating temperature and point the strobe light at the indicator on the front engine cover.
7. Relevant (see VECI label) from the marks illuminated by the stroboscope beam, the crankshaft pulley, while remaining motionless, should be aligned with the indicator on the cover.
8. If necessary, loosen the three mounting bolts and adjust the position of the distributor housing until the marks are correctly aligned.
9. Tighten the bolts and recheck. Make sure that the engine idle speed has not changed.
10. Turn off the engine and remove the stroboscope.
11. Replace the inspection plug and remove the jumper wire from the service connector.
