Note. All 1998 Civic models and some Integra models. Mitsubishi generators are used. Replacing the brushes and voltage regulator here requires a complete disassembly of the generator and should be entrusted to car service specialists.
Note. Replacing the brushes and voltage regulator on Nippondenso generators can be done by an amateur mechanic, but you should not attempt to perform a complete reconditioning of the generator yourself. It will be easier to replace the assembly.
1. Remove the alternator from the vehicle (see Removal and installation of the generator) and transfer it to the workbench.
2. Give three fixing nuts and remove the back cover of the generator (see accompanying illustration).
3. Give two screws securing the brush holder (see accompanying illustration).
4. Remove the brush holder from the rear end of the generator.
5. Measure the protrusion length of each of the brushes from the holder (see accompanying illustration) and compare the measurement results with the requirements Specifications. If the protrusion of the brushes is less than the lower limit of the permissible range, replace them.
6. Check the free movement of the brushes in the holder cartridges.
7. To replace the voltage regulator, you must first remove the brush holder assembly. Then release the fixing screws (see accompanying illustration) and remove the regulator from the generator.
8. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. When reinstalling the brush holder, press the brushes to pass the shaft with a small screwdriver.
