Examination
1. Turn off the ignition (the key must be turned to the OFF position).
2. Remove the cover, slider and protective screen from the distributor (with appropriate equipment).
3. Disconnect the electrical connectors of the primary circuit of the ignition coil.
4a. Using an ohmmeter, measure the resistance between the terminals (A and B) coil primary winding (see accompanying illustrations).
4b. Measuring the resistance of the primary winding of the ignition coil on models with a TEC distributor. Compare the measurement result with the requirements Specifications.
5a. Then measure the resistance between the positive terminal of the primary winding (A) and terminal of the secondary winding (models with Hitachi distributor). Again compare the result with the requirements Specifications.
5b. Measure the resistance between the positive terminal of the primary winding (A) and terminal of the secondary winding (models with TEC distributor).
6. Remember that standard winding resistance values change with temperature. IN Specifications the values given are for a coil temperature of 21°C.
7. If in any of the last two checks the measurement result is out of range, replace the ignition coil.
Replacement
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Remove the cover and protective screen from the distributor (with appropriate equipment) (see chapter Current service). Disconnect the wires from the coil primary circuit terminals.
3. Remove the two fixing screws (see accompanying illustration) and remove the ignition coil from the distributor assembly.
4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
