Examination
1. Check the power supply to the ignition module. Remove the distributor cap and slider and disconnect the black/yellow wire from the ICM (see accompanying illustration). Check for battery voltage directly at the wiring connector with the ignition on (key in ON position, engine not running).
2. Check the condition of the ignition circuit and related components. If there is no voltage at the ICM, check the condition of the wiring in the section of the circuit between the module and the battery (see chapter Onboard electrical equipment). First of all, you should always check the condition of the fuses of the ignition switches No. 41 (80A on Civic models and 100A on Integra models) and 42 (40 A) in the relay/fuse box under the hood. Also check fuse #9 (15 A) in the mounting block inside the car. Carefully examine the electrical circuit and verify that the ignition switch provides power to the ICM when the key is turned to the ON position. Also check the yellow-green wire between the ICM and the power control module (RSM) and a blue wire connected to the tachometer or its service connector. If there is no continuity between the ends of any of the mentioned wires, then there is a break and the corresponding wiring must be replaced. If there is conduction between one end of the wire and ground, then there is a short circuit (for more details see wiring diagrams in Chapter Onboard electrical equipment).
3. Verify that power is being supplied from the ignition coil to the ICM. With the ignition on (do not start the engine) make sure there is voltage between the blue (Distributor Hitachi) /white-blue (distributor TES) and body weight (see accompanying illustration). The voltage should be equal to that produced by the battery.
4. If there is no voltage, check the circuit in the area between the corresponding wire and the coil. Also check the coil windings for internal breaks (see Checking the condition and replacing the ignition coil).
5. If the coil and circuit wiring are OK and there is no spark, replace the ICM.
Replacement
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Remove the cover and, if equipped, the protective screen of the distributor (see chapter Current service).
3. Disconnect all electrical connectors on the ICM.
4. Remove the fixing screw (s) and remove the ICM from the ignition distributor (see accompanying illustration).
5. Install in reverse order
