General information
The vehicles in question have an electronic ignition system, which is controlled by the engine processor unit. On models CR-V 1997-00 and Odyssey 2.2 / 2.3 l with an ignition distributor, it is possible to set the ignition timing at idle (basic ignition setting) by placing the processor unit in adjustment mode. On Odyssey V6 3.5 L models, only checking the ignition timing is allowed on its own, which is performed only in a car service. If the ignition setting is incorrect on these engines, the ignition circuit and sensors should be checked. If the sensors are working, then you need to replace the processor unit. To check and set the ignition timing on engines with a distributor, installation marks are provided that are marked on the crankshaft pulley. These marks are aligned with the pointer on the cover next to the pulley. Two setting marks have a distinctive color: the white mark corresponds to TDC and the red mark is used to set the idle ignition.
On CR-V and 4-cylinder Odyssey 2.2 and 2.3 L models, the normal direction of engine rotation is counterclockwise (when viewed from the side of the pulley). On these engines, the red timing mark is to the left of the white (when viewed from the side of the pulley). On both sides of the red label there are marks indicating the range of ignition setting, and located at intervals of 2°. For example, if the ignition timing should be 16±2°and if the pointer falls into this range, then the ignition timing is correct.
Adjustment (only CR-V and 4-cylinder Odyssey models)
1. Set the gearshift lever to neutral.
2. Warm up the engine. When the engine is cold, turn off the heater valve and increase the engine speed to 3000 rpm, until the cooling system fan turns on for the first time. Stop the engine. Make sure all consumers are disabled.
3. Using a paper clip, bridge the findings of the blue diagnostic connector.
The diagnostic connector on the CR-V model is located on the passenger side under the dashboard (one wire is brown, the other is black). On 4-cylinder Odysseys, the connector is also located on the passenger side under the dash (one wire is brown with black stripes the other is red).
4. Connect the stroboscope. Check idle speed if necessary. Start the engine.
5. Point the strobe light at the mark on the crankshaft pulley. The red mark must be aligned with the pointer on the camshaft timing belt cover.
6. If necessary, set the ignition timing by turning the ignition distributor with the bolts released.
The ignition timing must be
on CR-V 1997-98 | 14-18°at 700-800 rpm |
on CR-V 1999-00 | 14-18°at 680-780 rpm |
on 4-cylinder Odyssey 2.2 l | 13-17°at 650-750 rpm |
on 4-cylinder Odyssey 2.3 l | 10-14°at 650-750 rpm |
7. At the end, tighten the distributor mounting bolts with a torque of 24 Nm and remove the jumper.
