When the diagnostic connector (located under the dashboard on the passenger side) connected to a special tool as shown. [D4] indicator will flash indicating a fault code (DTC), with the ignition switch on (position II).
When the [D4] indicator lights up, connect the diagnostic connector to the special tool. Then turn the ignition key to position (II) and watch the [D4] indicator.
Codes from 1 to 9 are displayed with short blinks. Codes 10 to 15 are displayed in a series of long and short flashes. One long blink is equivalent to 10 short blinks. Add the long and short blinks together to determine the code. After determining the code, refer to the electrical system fault chart on pages 14-A-306 and A-307.
Some PGM-FI problems will also cause the [D4] indicator to turn on. After repairing the PGM-FI system, disconnect the backup fuse (7.5A) in the engine compartment fuse and relay box for more than 10 seconds to restore the TCM memory, then check again.
Note: Disconnecting the backup fuse will also reset the radio and clock waveforms. Note how the radio readings were set before removing the fuse so you can set them correctly later.
1.Remove the driver's side trim panel.
2.Loosen the two mounting bolts and remove one mounting bolt.
3.Remove the TCM, then turn it over.
4. Check the TCM target according to the fault table using a digital tester and feeler gauge as shown.
Perform a re-check of the TCM.
1. Turn off the ignition
2. Remove backup fuse No. 46 (7.5A) from the engine compartment fuse and relay box for 10 seconds to clear the TCM memory.
Note: Disconnecting the backup fuse will also reset the radio and clock waveforms. Note the radio readings before removing the fuse so you can set them correctly later.
Final operation
Note: This operation must be performed after any malfunction.
1.Remove the special tool from the diagnostic connector.
2.Install the TCM.
3. Set the radio and clock.
Fault Symptom Table
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC): This is the number of flashes of the [D4|] indicator when the diagnostic connector is connected to a special tool (SCS - shorted connector).
Diagnostic trouble code (DTC): This is the number of flashes of the [D4] indicator when the diagnostic connector is connected to the special tools (SCS short connector).
If the self-diagnosis indicator [D4] does not flash, perform inspection according to the table.
Note:
- If the customer describes a symptom for code 3, although the [D4] indicator is not flashing, 6 or 11, it is necessary to recreate the symptom by testing the movement, then check the DTC again.
- Sometimes [D4] indicator and multi-function indicator lamp (MIL) can be turned on simultaneously. If so, check the PGM-R system per DTC, then reset the memory by removing the backup fuse in the sub-valve fuse/relay box for more than 10 seconds. Drive the vehicle for a few minutes at speeds above 50 km/h and check the DTC again.
- Disconnecting the backup fuse also cancels the radio and clock. Note how the radio was installed so that later you can install it again.
