Removal
1. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery.
2. Remove the air intake duct and resonator.
3. Disconnect the ground cables from the box and starter.
S4PA, S4XA
Remove the automatic transmission grounding cable holder.
4. Disconnect the lockout control solenoid valve connector.
S4PA
S4XA
S4NA
5. Disconnect the throttle control cable from the control lever.
6. Disconnect the automatic transmission fluid cooler hoses from the tubes. Place the ends of the coolant hoses upward to prevent fluid from escaping, then install the plugs.
S4NA
7. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connector, vehicle speed sensor connector.
S4NA
Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor connectors and the input and output shaft speed sensors.
S4PA
8. Unscrew the bolts securing the gearbox housing (and mounting bolt to the rear of the engine - only for S4NA, S4PA).
9. Unscrew the drain plug and drain the automatic transmission fluid. Install the drain plug with a new seal.
10. Remove the cotter pin and nut and separate the ball joint from the lower control arm.
11. Unscrew the damper fork mounting bolts and separate the damper fork from the damper.
12. Using the rod as a lever, lift the left and right drive shafts.
13. Pull out the inner hinges (left and right), then separate the drive shafts from the box.
14. Place protective covers on the ends of the drive shafts.
Note: Lubricate the contact surfaces with engine oil before assembly.
15. Remove the lower crankcase protection.
16. Remove exhaust pipe A.
S4NA
17. Remove the engine mounting bracket.
18. Remove the torque converter lower cover and shift control cable holder. When removing the shift control cable, first remove the cotter pin and pin, and then separate the control lever,
19. Remove the eight torque converter drive plate bolts, one at a time, while rotating the crankshaft pulley to provide access.
20. Unscrew the bolts and remove the right front engine mount.
S4XA
Remove the intermediate shaft.
S4PA, S4XA
17. Remove the shift control cable cover, then separate the shift control cable from the lever.
Caution: Be careful to bend the cable when removing.
18. Remove the right front bracket (support), then separate the end of the throttle control cable from the sector.
19. Disconnect the automatic transmission fluid cooler hoses from the tubes. After disconnecting, lift the ends of the hoses up and insert plugs to avoid leakage of working fluid.
20. Remove the engine bracket and torque converter lower cover.
21. Remove the eight torque converter drive plate bolts, one at a time, while rotating the crankshaft pulley to provide access.
S4NA and S4PA
21. Remove the distributor.
22. Attach the lift bracket to the engine using the distributor mounting bolt, and then lift the engine slightly.
S4NA, S4PA, S4XA
23. Place a jack under the box and lift the box slightly to remove the weight from the support, then remove the box mounting bracket.
24. Remove the bolts securing the gearbox housing and the bolts securing it to the rear of the engine.
25. Move the box away from the engine until there is a 14 mm gap required for the locating pins to come out, and then lower the box on the jack.
Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
