Fluid Recommendations
All Honda automatic transmissions use Dexron II, an automatic transmission fluid. This fluid directly replaces the Dexron fluid recommended for older models.
Level check
The fluid should be checked approximately once a month and the change frequency is indicated in the table at the end of the chapter. The car, before checking the fluid level, should drive a few kilometers, allowing the oil to warm up completely, then make sure you park evenly and turn off the engine.
The measuring probe is located on the front-right of the box body, near or below the battery. It can either be screwed in or a small one pulled out, like an engine oil dipstick. To check the level, remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and reinsert.
The threaded dipstick does not need to be twisted to determine the liquid level. Only the beginning of the thread should sit down not the body. Twisting the dipstick will give incorrect readings.
Pull out the dipstick. The fluid level must be within the dash marks, between the upper and lower markers. If fluid needs to be added, add Dexron II through the dipstick hole. Add only the amount needed to keep the level within the check marks on the dipstick. Overfilling may damage the box. There is less than 1 liter between the top and bottom marks on the dipstick. When reinstalling the probe, screw in the thread for the twist-on probe type and tighten it only to the tension of the fingers; never use the key. Make sure the dipstick is fully seated.
Drain and fill
1. The car, before starting, must be warmed up to operating temperature. If possible, drive a few miles to warm up the box before draining.
2. With the engine off, raise and secure the front of the vehicle. Dexterity and long arms will allow you to do this work without lifting, but it is much easier to do this with the car raised.
3. Place the pallet under the box.
4. Remove the bottom drain plug using a ratchet wrench inserted into the square notch; don't try to do this by grabbing a round bolt with a pair of pliers. Drain the liquid.
5. Using a new washer, install the drain plug and tighten it to 40 Nm.
6. Fill the box with oil through the dipstick hole. On late models with a retractable probe, a narrow funnel may be needed. Check the level frequently with a dipstick. Avoid overfilling.
7. Lower the vehicle to the ground and check that it is level. Remove the dipstick and double check the level, adding oil if necessary. Install the dipstick securely.
