Description

1. The rear axle of the 1985-1987 models is semi-unloaded. The brake drums and wheels are mounted directly on the axle shaft. The differential cup is attached to the axle housing. The main gear housing is mounted on the car body. Otherwise, the rear wheel drive is similar to the front wheel drive.

2. Since 1988, cars have been equipped with independent rear wheel suspension, the differential is mounted on the car body. Otherwise, the rear wheel drive is similar to the front wheel drive.

Control

3. Don't rush to attribute some faults to the rear axle.

4. General procedure for diagnosing the rear axle:
  • a) Road noise is often perceived as mechanical damage. Drive on roads with different types of surfaces: road noise should not change either when driving under load or when coasting
  • b) Tyre noise: Worn or poorly inflated tyres can produce vibrations and noises of varying intensity. Tyre noise remains constant, while axle noise changes with acceleration and deceleration.
  • c) The noise of the engine and gearbox can be heard as the noise of the axle due to the transmission of sound along the cardan shaft. Note the engine speed and the nature of the noise. Stop the car, put it in neutral and accelerate the engine to the same speed. If the noise is identified as the same, the rear axle is not to blame.

5. Working with the rear axle requires a lot of measurements during setup and special tools. Only those works that can be done independently are described here.
