Description
1. Rear axle of 1985-1987 models semi unloaded. Brake drums and wheels are mounted directly on the axle shaft. The differential cup is attached to the axle housing. The final drive housing is mounted on the car body. The rest of the rear wheel drive is similar to the front wheel drive.
2. Since 1988, cars have been equipped with independent rear wheel suspension, the differential is mounted on the car body. The rest of the rear wheel drive is similar to the front wheel drive.
Control
3. Do not rush to attribute some malfunctions to the rear axle.
4. The general procedure for diagnosing the rear axle:
- A) Road noise is often perceived as mechanical damage. Drive on roads with different types of surface: road noise should not change both when driving under load and when coasting
- b) Tire noise: Worn or poorly inflated tires can produce vibrations and noises of varying intensity. Tire noise stays constant while axle noise changes during acceleration and deceleration.
- V) Engine and gearbox noise can be heard as bridge noise due to sound transmission through the driveshaft. Note the engine speed and the nature of the noise generated. Stop the car, turn on neutral and accelerate the engine to the same speed. If the noise is identified as the same, the rear axle is not to blame.
5. Working on the rear axle requires a lot of setup measurements and special tools. Here are descriptions of only those works that can be carried out independently.
