Checking the power relay (Honda Civic 8)

Use this table to determine the relay type and perform the test assigned to it.

Normally open type (except PGM-FI relay 1, ignition coil relay, additional PGM-FI relay, ETCS relay, rear window defroster relay, air conditioner blower relay and electric motor relay)

Check the connection between the terminals.

There should be a connection between terminals #1 and #2 if power and ground are connected to terminals #3 and #4, respectively.

There should be no connection between terminals #1 and #2 if the power is disconnected.

1. Disconnect the D (20P) connector from the relay/fuse box located in the engine compartment.

2. From the engine compartment fuse/relay box…


2. From the engine compartment fuse/relay box side, perform the following check.



Main Relay 1 PGM-FI


Main Relay 1 PGM-FI



Connect terminal #16 to the body ground. There should be voltage between terminal #5 and the body ground.

Disconnect terminal #16 from the body ground. There should be no voltage between terminal #5 and the body ground.

Ignition Coil Relay:



Connect terminal #16 to the body ground. There should be voltage between terminal #18 and the body ground.

Disconnect terminal #16 from the body ground. There should be no voltage between terminal #18 and the body ground.

Additional PGM-FI relay:



Connect terminal #20 to the body ground. There should be voltage between terminal #9 and the body ground.

Disconnect terminal #20 from the body ground. There should be no voltage between terminal #9 and the body ground.

ETCS relay:

Connect voltage and ground between terminals #15 and #17. There should be voltage between terminal #6 and the body ground.

Disconnect the voltage and ground between terminals #15 and #17. There should be no voltage between terminal #6 and the body ground.

Rear Window Defogger Relay:

Connect voltage and ground between terminals #4 and #14. There should be voltage between terminal #3 and the body ground.



Disconnect voltage and ground between terminals #4 and #14. There should be no voltage between terminal #3 and body ground.

Radiator Fan Relay, Condenser Fan Relay, Heater Motor Relay

1. Disconnect connector E (20P) from the relay and fuse box located in the engine compartment.

2. From the engine compartment fuse/relay box…


2. From the engine compartment fuse/relay box side, perform the following check.

Radiator Fan Relay

Connect voltage and ground between terminals #5 and #8. There should be voltage between terminal #13 and the body ground.

Disconnect voltage and ground between terminals #5 and #8. There should be no voltage between terminal #13 and body ground.

Condenser Fan Relay:

Connect voltage and ground between terminals #4 and #16. There should be voltage between terminal #12 and body ground.

Disconnect voltage and ground between terminals #4 and #16. There should be no voltage between terminal #12 and body ground.

Heater Motor Relay:

Connect voltage and ground between terminals #1 and #8. There should be voltage between terminal #3 and the body ground.

Disconnect voltage and ground between terminals #1 and #8. There should be no voltage between terminal #3 and body ground.



5-terminal type

Check the connection between the terminals.

There should be a connection between terminals #1 and #2 if power and ground are connected to terminals #3 and #5, respectively.

The connection should be between terminals #1 and #4 when the power is disconnected.
