1. Check the power steering fluid level and the pump drive belt tension (see further).

2. Start the engine, let it run at idle speed and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to warm up the fluid.

3. Attach the spring balance to the steering wheel. With the engine running at idle speed and the vehicle on a clean, dry surface, pull the spring balance as shown in the figure and read the reading as soon as the wheels begin to turn.

4. The force should not exceed 34 N (3.5 kgf/m). If it is greater, check the steering gear and power steering pump.
