Caution: To avoid damage to the stator winding, do not perform this test for more than 10 seconds.


1. (Mitsuba (0.8 kW)) Disconnect the wire from the starter terminal "S".

3. Connect the battery wires to the traction relay terminals as shown in the figure. Make sure that the overrunning clutch gear has moved outward.

4. (Except Mitsuba (0.8 kW)) With the connections made as in the previous step and the overrunning clutch pinion extended, disconnect the negative cable from the "M" terminal. Make sure that the pinion remains extended.

5. Disconnect the negative cable from the traction relay housing. Make sure that the overrunning clutch pinion gear is retracted inward.

6. Clamp the starter in a vice, placing a rag underneath.

7. Connect the wires from the battery to the starter as shown in the figure. Make sure the starter armature rotates.

8. Make sure that the starter armature rotates smoothly and the drive gear of the overrunning clutch is extended. Measure the current with an ammeter (battery voltage 11.5 V).

Nominal current:
  • Denso (1.0 kW) - < 90 A (at 3000 rpm)
  • Denso (0.8 kW) - < 50 A (at 6000 rpm)
  • Mitsuba — < 80 A (at 2600 rpm)
