Driving a car with automatic transmission (Honda Civic 7)

To control the automatic transmission, a selector is installed on the central console. The selector is connected to the valve block by a cable, and with its help you can set the range of gears used. To prevent breakdowns of the automatic transmission when the wrong range is selected (for example, moving from "D" to "R" when moving forward), a lock is installed on the selector, only when pressed, "dangerous" switching is possible. The lock allows you to avoid a situation when, through carelessness, one of the unacceptable ranges of movement can be engaged.

The selector has six positions - "P", "R", "N" "D", "D3", "2"

Sedan.

When switching, you need to press the lock.

There is no need to press when switching to the lock.

When switching, you need to press the lock and the brake pedal.

Hatchback (five-door models).

When shifting, you need to press the brake pedal.

There is no need to press the brake pedal when shifting.

Position "P"

Selected when the car is parked for a long time. In this position of the range selector lever, all controls in the box are turned off, and its output shaft is locked; the vehicle cannot move. The selector can only be moved to this position when it has come to a complete stop. Moving the selector to the "P" position while moving will damage the gearbox.

Position "R"

Reverse. The selector can be moved to this position only when the car is stationary. Moving the selector to the "R" position while moving forward can lead to failure of the gearbox and other transmission components.

Position "N"

Corresponds to neutral. All control elements are switched off in the gearbox, which ensures the absence of a rigid kinematic connection between its driving and driven shafts. The output shaft locking mechanism is switched off, i.e. the car can move freely. It is not recommended to move the selector to the "N" position while coasting (by inertia). Never turn off the ignition when driving downhill. This practice is dangerous because you can lose control of the car.

Position "D"

The main driving mode. It provides automatic switching from first to fourth gear. It is recommended to use it in normal driving conditions.

Position "D3"

This mode is recommended for use when driving on slopes. It provides automatic switching from first to third gear. Switching to fourth gear is prohibited. In this range, the engine braking mode is effectively used.

Position "2"

Driving is only permitted in first and second gears. This range allows for maximum engine braking. It is recommended for driving on steep descents, ascents and off-road.

When braking with the engine, move the selector to position "2". Do not shift the automatic transmission selector at high speeds, this may cause the car to skid and roll over or damage the transmission.

Disabling the emergency selector lock

If you cannot move the selector from the "P" position even when you press the brake pedal, do the following:

a) Apply the parking brake.
b) Remove the key from the ignition switch.
c) Using a screwdriver, remove the lock switch cover.

Sedan.

Hatchback (five-door models).

d) (Sedan) Insert the key into the selector lock switch connector, d) (Hatchback) Insert a screwdriver into the selector lock switch connector.
e) (Sedan) Press the key simultaneously with the lock on the automatic transmission selector and move the selector from position "P" to position "N".
