Withdrawal
1. Park the vehicle with the front wheels turned straight ahead. Under the instrument panel, remove the cover of the steering column connecting hinge (see accompanying illustration).
2. Mark the position of the intermediate shaft of the steering column in relation to the input shaft of the steering gear, then loosen the pinch screw (see accompanying illustration).
3. Jack up the front of the car and place it on jack stands. Engage the parking brake. After removing the ignition key from the lock, lock the steering column.
Attention! Turning the steering wheel with the rack and pinion removed will damage the SRS cable drum.
4. Remove shift rod and shift lever torque rod from transmission (models with manual transmission), or gearshift cable (models with AT) (see chapter Gear box).
5. Remove the catalytic converter (see chapter Power and exhaust systems).
6a. Place a drain pan under the steering gear housing. Disconnect the PAS hydraulic lines from the steering box (plug open line ends immediately to minimize fluid loss and prevent dirt from entering the system) (see accompanying illustration).
6b. If equipped, remove the chassis stiffener (see accompanying illustration).
7. Release the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle arms (see Removal and installation of tips of steering draughts). Remove the left tie rod end.
8a. Support the steering mechanism from below and give the bolts of its fastening (see accompanying illustrations).
8b. Lower the rack and pinion assembly while carefully disengaging the steering column intermediate shaft from the gear input shaft. Slide the steering gear assembly as far to the right as possible and rotate it with the input shaft forward. Lower the left end of the assembly under the frame and, gradually shifting to the left, remove the rack and pinion from under the car.
Installation
1. Place the steering gear assembly in its proper place and engage its input shaft with the intermediate shaft of the steering column (follow the correct alignment of the landing marks applied during dismantling).
2. Screw in the rack and pinion assembly mounting bolts (don't forget to put washers under the bolt heads) and tighten them to the required torque.
3. Screw the tip onto the left link, then thread both tips into the steering knuckle arms (see Removal and installation of tips of steering draughts).
4. Connect the PAS hydraulic lines to the steering box.
5. Restore original transmission drive linkage (see chapter Gear box) and catalytic converter (see chapter Power and exhaust systems).
6. Lower the vehicle to the ground, screw in the intermediate shaft coupling bolt and tighten it to the required torque. Install the steering column joint cover and secure it with the clamps. Make sure that the cover flange is correctly put on the mounting holes on the guide pins on the bulkhead of the engine compartment (see illustration for paragraph 1, Removal).
7. Fill the reservoir of the power steering system with the required amount of fluid of the required grade (see chapter Current service). Bleed air from steering system (see Removing air from the hydraulic path of the power steering system).
