Steering pump for early models
1 - Pressure line bolts; 2 - Return line clamp; 3 - Adjusting bolt; 4 - Mounting bolts
Steering pump for late model years
1 - Pressure line bolts; 2 - Return line clamp; 3 - Adjusting bolt; 4 - Mounting bolt
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then the positive cable.
Warning! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
2. Disconnect the hydraulic lines from the pump (see illustrations above). Note the difference in the design of the pressure and return line unions: the return hose is secured to the union with a clamp, while the pressure line is connected with two bolts. Immediately after disconnecting, plug the open ends of both hoses to minimize hydraulic fluid loss and prevent dirt from entering the system. Replace the sealing ring on the pressure line union.
3. Loosen the steering pump adjusting bolt.
4. Loosen the mounting bolts and remove the pump from the engine.
5. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Do not forget to bleed the air from the steering system after completing the procedure (see Bleeding air from the hydraulic circuit of the power steering system) and adjust the tension of the drive belt (see Chapter Routine maintenance).
