Warning: To avoid damage to the cylinder head, wait until the coolant temperature drops below 38°C before loosening the bolts.
Attention:
- Label all wiring and hoses before disassembling to avoid incorrect connections during reassembly. Also make sure they do not come into contact with other wiring or hoses.
- Check the timing belt before removing the cylinder head.
- Turn the crankshaft pulley so that the piston of the first cylinder is at TDC.
1. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery,
2. Drain the coolant. It is recommended to remove the radiator cap during this operation to speed up the draining of the liquid.
3. Remove the intake air duct and air filter housing.
4. Remove the mounting bolt and lock bolt, then remove the power steering pump drive belt and pump.
5. Loosen the tensioner roller center nut and adjusting bolt, then remove the air conditioning compressor drive belt.
6. Loosen the mounting nut and lock bolt, then remove the alternator drive belt.
7. Remove the power steering pump bracket.
8. Loosen the lock nut, remove the throttle cable and throttle control cable, then pull the end of the cable off the sector,
Attention:
- Do not bend the cable when removing.
- Adjust the throttle cable during installation.
- Adjust the throttle control cable during installation.
For engines D14A3, D15Z4, D15Z5, D16Y7:

9. Relieve the fuel pressure, loosen the fuel filter access bolt approximately one turn,
Warning: Do not smoke when working on the fuel system. Keep open flames away from the work area. Drain fuel into a suitable container.
10. Remove the fuel vapor removal system hose from the intake manifold, the fuel supply hose and the crankcase ventilation system hose.
For engines D14A3, D14A4, D15Z4, D15Z5, D16Y7:

Except for engines D14A3, D14A4, D15Z4, D15Z5, D16Y7:

11. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose, fuel return hose and vacuum hose,
12. Remove the coolant bypass hose.
Engines D14A3, D14A4, D15Z4, D15Z5, D16Y7:

Except for engines D14A3, D14A4, D15Z4, D15Z5, D16Y7:

13. Remove the upper radiator hose, heater hose and coolant bypass hose.

14. Remove the engine wire harness connectors and wire harness clamps from the cylinder head and intake manifold:
- Four fuel injector connectors
- Coolant Temperature Sensor Connector
- Coolant Temperature Switch Connector
- Coolant Temperature Gauge Unit Connector
- Throttle Position Sensor Connector
- Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor Connector
- Heated oxygen sensor connector (D16Y5 engines (models KE, KG), D16Y7, D16Y8)
- Oxygen sensor connector (engines D14A3, D14A4, D15Z5, D15Z6, D15Z7, D16Y4, D16Y6 (model KQ))

- Idle Air Control Valve Connector
15. Remove the spark plug caps and distributor.
16. Remove the top bracket.
Attention:
- Use a jack to support the engine before removing the top bracket.
- Make sure to place a pad between the oil pan and the jack.

17. Remove the cylinder head cover.
18. Remove the timing belt.
19. Remove the camshaft pulley and rear cover.

20. Remove the exhaust manifold.
21. Remove the intake manifold.
22. Remove the cylinder head mounting bolts, then remove the cylinder head.
Caution: To prevent warping, loosen bolts ⅓ turn at a time in the sequence shown in the illustration.
