2. Connect a hand-held tachometer according to the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Set the parking brake and block the wheels. Make sure the transmission is in neutral (manual transmission) or in position "P" (automatic transmission).
4. Start the engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature at 3000 rpm. As soon as the cooling fan turns on, reduce the engine speed to idle.
5. On all Integra models and all Civic models except 1996 and 1997 D16Y5 with CVT, 1996 through 1998 D16Y8 with AT, all 1998 D16Y7 and D16Y5 with CVT, perform the following procedures:
- a) Stop the engine and disconnect the electrical wiring from the idle air control (IAC) valve (see Chapter Power and exhaust systems). On all 1998 Integra models and 1998 D16Y8 manual and D16Y5 CVT Civic models, disconnect the charcoal canister purge solenoid valve;
- b) Start the engine and, pressing the accelerator pedal slightly, fix its speed at 1000 rpm. Slowly release the pedal, reducing the speed to idle. Make sure that all electrical consumers are switched off, and the radiator fan and air conditioner are not functioning;
- c) For Civic models, idle speed should be in the range of 450±50 rpm, for all Integra models except the 1998 B18C5 - 480±50 rpm, for the 1998 Integra B18C5 - 550±50 rpm;
A — Adjusting screw
IN — IAC valve connector (on most models it should be disconnected) e) Stop the engine and connect the wiring to the IAC and charcoal canister purge valves;
- d) If the idle speed needs to be adjusted, remove the cover and turn the adjusting screw until it is normal (see accompanying illustration). Make adjustments in stages with a step of 1/4 turn of the screw;
- f) Remove the 7.5A reverse light fuse from the engine compartment fuse box for ten seconds - this will clear the ECM fault code memory;
- g) Start the engine and wait for about a minute, allowing the idle speed to stabilize. Read the tachometer readings and compare them with the requirements Specifications or the values given on the VECI label (in case of discrepancies, preference should be given to the latter).
6. On the Civic models specified in paragraph 5, without disconnecting the IAC valve, perform the following procedures:
- a) Start the engine and wait for about a minute, allowing the idle speed to stabilize. Read the tachometer readings and compare them with the requirements Specifications or the values given on the VECI label (in case of discrepancies, preference should be given to the latter).
- b) If the idle speed needs to be adjusted, remove the cap and turn the adjusting screw until it is normal. Adjust in stages with a step of 1/4 turn of the screw;
7. On all models, turn on the A/C and select the maximum speed mode of the heater fan. The engine speed should increase by 50÷100 rpm, otherwise there is a malfunction of the IAC valve or the control system (see Chapter Engine management systems).
