Examination
1. Idle speed is the engine speed when the gas pedal is released. This parameter is one of the critical ones that determine both the operation of the engine as a whole and the correct functioning of its various subsystems.
2. Set the parking brake and support the wheels with wheel chocks. Make sure the transmission is in neutral (RKPP) or set to "R" or "N" (AT).
3. Connect a manual tachometer according to the manufacturers instructions.
4. Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the EVAP charcoal canister purge solenoid valve (see accompanying illustration).
5. Start the engine and at 3000 rpm warm it up to normal operating temperature.
6. As soon as the cooling fan turns on, slowly reduce the engine speed to idle. Make sure all accessories are off and the transmission is in neutral (RKPP), or in position "R"/"N" (AT).
7. Read the tachometer reading and compare it with the value given on the VECI label or in the Specifications for this Chapter.
Note. In case of conflict, the information given on the VECI label shall prevail.
Adjustment
1. Before proceeding with the adjustment, make sure that the cooling fan is turned off.
2. If the idle speed is out of range, remove the plug (see accompanying illustration) and make the necessary adjustment by turning the adjusting screw with a screwdriver in the appropriate direction. Rotate the screw in short steps (1/4 turn per approach), each time checking the new engine speed.
3. Stop the engine and disconnect the tachometer. Repair the original EVAP solenoid valve connection.
