If a stand is not available, disassembly should be performed with the engine placed on a sturdy workbench or securely placed on a solid garage floor. When working without a stand, make sure that the engine does not accidentally tip over.
If you plan to replace the engine with a remanufactured one, remove all attachments and external components from the old one and transfer them to the replacement unit. The following units/components are subject to replacement:
- a) Generator with brackets;
- b) Components of emission control systems;
- c) Distributor, high voltage wires and spark plugs;
- d) Thermostat with casing cover;
- e) Water pump bypass pipe;
- f) Fuel injection system components;
- g) Intake manifold and exhaust manifold;
- h) Oil filter
- i) Engine mounts;
- j) Clutch assembly (manual transmission);
- k) Flywheel/drive disk;
Note: When removing external components from an old engine, try to remember the characteristic features of their installation. Record in a notebook the mounting positions of gaskets, seals, spacers and bushings, pins, brackets, washers, bolts and other small parts.
When selecting a scheme using a reduced block kit consisting of a cylinder block with a crankshaft and connecting rod and piston groups installed in it, also remove the cylinder head, oil pan and oil pump from the old unit (see possible alternative schemes for performing major repairs in Alternative options for engine repair schemes).
When performing a complete overhaul of an old unit, disassemble it and remove all internal components. The optimal order for performing the engine disassembly procedure is given below:
- a) Intake manifold and exhaust manifold;
- b) Cylinder head cover;
- c) Timing belt covers with bolts;
- d) Timing drive (timing belt with toothed wheels);
- e) Assembling the rocker arms with the camshaft(s);
- f) Cylinder head;
- g) Water pump;
- h) Oil pan;
- i) Oil pump with oil pickup;
- j) Oil sprayers (on Integra models with the corresponding configuration);
- k) Connecting rod and piston assemblies (b18B1 engines);
- l) Crankshaft and main bearings;
- m) Connecting rod and piston assemblies (engines B18C1, B18C5, D16Y5, D16Y7 and D16Y8).
Before you begin disassembling the engine, prepare the following materials, tools and parts (see also Engine assembly procedure):
- a) Standard set of locksmith tools;
- b) A set of cardboard or plastic containers/polyethylene bags for organized storage of small components;
- c) Scraper for cleaning mating surfaces;
- d) Countersink for removing stepped wear on the top of the cylinders;
- e) Puller for dismantling the torsional vibration damper;
- f) Set of micrometers;
- g) Telescopic bore gauge;
- h) Dial plunger type meter (DTI);
- i) Valve spring compressor tool;
- j) Hone for processing cylinder mirrors;
- k) Tool for cleaning grooves for installing piston rings;
- l) Electric drill;
- m) Set of taps and guides;
- n) Wire brushes;
- o) Cylindrical brushes for cleaning oil galleries;
- p) Solvent.
