Check/Adjustment
Adjust the idle speed using a Honda tester. If this is not possible, check the following:
Note: Before adjusting the idle speed, check the following items:
- The MIL does not indicate a malfunction.
- Ignition advance.
- Candles.
- Air filter.
- Crankcase ventilation system.
1. Connect the tachometer.
2. Start the engine. Maintain rpm at 3000 without engine load (transmission in neutral position, automatic transmission selector in position [P], [N]), until the engine is completely warmed up (The radiator fan should turn on).
3. Check the idle speed without engine load: headlights, ventilation, heated rear window, air conditioning, radiator fan should be turned off.
Note: (For KS models) remove fuse No. 18 (7.5A) from the fuse box and check that the headlights and side markers are not on.
The idle speed should be:
Engine D15Z5:
- M/T — 700±50 rpm
- A/T - 700±50 rpm, position [N] or [P]
In addition to the D15Z5 engine:
- M/T - 750±50 rpm
- A/T - 750±50 rpm, position [N] or [P]
4. If necessary, adjust the idle speed by turning the adjusting screw clockwise or counterclockwise by ½ turn.
Engines D14A3, D15Z4, D15Z5:
Note: When removing the ACL housing, do not disconnect the intake air temperature sensor connector.
5. After turning the adjusting screw ½ turn, check the idle speed again. If the value is still not correct, turn the screw another ½ turn.
Note. Do not turn the adjusting screw more than ½ turn at once without measuring the tachometer.
Leave the engine idling for one minute with the heater fan on (HI position) and air conditioner, then recheck the idle speed.
The idle speed should be:
Engine D15Z5:
M/T - 780±50 rpm A/T - 780±50 rpm, position [N] or [P]
In addition to the D15Z5 engine:
M/T - 810±50 rpm A/T - 810±50 rpm, position [N] or [P]
Note. Do not touch the adjustment screw while the air conditioner is on.
