1. Connect the shorted SCS connector to the diagnostic connector (the two-pin diagnostic connector is located under the front panel on the passenger side closer to the door). Turn on the ignition (ON).
2. Memorize the DTC: The MIL displays the DTC by duration and number of flashes. The indicator may display several fault codes sequentially, one after the other. Codes 1 to 9 are issued in one sequence of short flashes. Codes 10 to 20 are issued in two sequences of long and short flashes. The number of long flashes is equivalent to the first digit, the number of short flashes is equivalent to the second. Sometimes it is difficult to determine the number of flashes of the first series, in any case, count the flashes twice to be completely sure of the fault code.
II. Procedure for resetting the memory of the engine control unit
1. Turn off the ignition (OFF).
2. Remove the VAK-UP fuse (RADIO) (7.5A) from the relay/fuse box (in the engine compartment) for 10 seconds to reset the control unit memory.
III. Final procedure (this procedure must be carried out after any troubleshooting)
1. Disconnect the shorted SCS connector.
Note: if no fault codes are stored in the control unit's memory, the indicator lamp will remain lit after turning on the ignition (with attached SCS connector).
2. Carry out the procedure for resetting the control unit memory.
IV. When replacing the control unit with a known good one for double-checking (on models KG, KE, KS, KQ, KR). The control unit has an engine blocking system (immobilizer). A good control unit has a different code stored inside it, the code must be rewritten using a PGM tester. Otherwise the engine will not start.
Malfunctions
*1: Models with catalytic converter
*2: Models without catalytic converter
*3: D15Z5 engine
*4: Models with A/T
If the fault code is not in the table, recheck the code. If the code is still not from the table, replace the electronic control unit (ESM). The MIL may come on, indicating a system malfunction, due to a poor electrical connection. First check the quality of the connections, clean or repair the contacts if necessary.
The MIL light does not light up if there is a malfunction in the electrical load sensor circuit (ELD). However, connecting a shorted SCS connector will generate a code.
