Warning! Remember that dust generated during wear of the clutch slave disk friction linings may contain asbestos, which is harmful to health. Do not blow off dust with compressed air and try not to inhale it. Do not use petroleum-based solvents to wipe clutch components – use only special brake cleaners or pure methyl alcohol. Place used rags in a hermetically sealed container.
Removal
1. Loosen the clutch slave cylinder (see Removal and installation the clutch slave cylinder), without disconnecting the hydraulic line from the master cylinder. Tie the cylinder to the side with wire.
2. Remove the gearbox (see 5-speed manual transmission).

3. Remove the release bearing from the primary shaft journal, disconnect the clutch release fork retaining spring from the spherical support ball pin and remove the fork (see accompanying illustration).
Examination

1. Holding the bearing by the outer race, press the inner race and rotate it (see accompanying illustration). The bearing should rotate freely and silently, otherwise it must be replaced.
2. Wipe the bearing with a clean cloth and inspect it for signs of wear, cracks, and other mechanical damage. The release bearing is usually replaced every time the clutch components are serviced. Never wash the bearing in solvent to avoid compromising the tightness of its assembly. Also check the clutch release lever for cracks and signs of deformation.
Installation

1. Pack the inner groove of the release bearing with high-melting grease. Lightly lubricate the splines of the primary shaft journal of the gearbox and the bearing holder of the latter with the same grease (see accompanying illustration).

2a. Using the same grease, lubricate the socket for the ball pin on the back side of the release fork...

2b....and also a socket for the seat of the actuator cylinder pusher (see accompanying illustrations).

2c. Lubricate the ball pin of the spherical support of the engagement lever.
3. Engage the release bearing with the clutch release fork.
4. Place the bearing on the transmission input shaft front bearing retainer while simultaneously inserting the end of the release fork through the hole in the clutch housing. Firmly seat the release fork on the ball pin of the spherical bearing.
5. Lightly lubricate the surface of the release bearing that contacts the diaphragm spring petals with high-melting grease.
6. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling.
