Note. If the engine is removed from the vehicle and installed on a workbench/mounting stand, the procedures described in the following paragraphs should be omitted.
1. Remove the gearbox (see 5-speed manual gearbox).
2. Remove clutch components (see Removal, condition check and installation of clutch assembly components).
3. Using a flashlight, inspect the bearing for signs of excessive wear, signs of grease drying out, cracks, scoring, or other mechanical damage. If such defects are found, replace the bearing.
4. Bearing removal can be done with a small sliding weight puller (see accompanying illustration).
5. If there is no puller at hand, remove the flywheel (see Engine repair without removal from the car - Civic models), then use a hammer and drift to knock the bearing out of its seat (knock out forward from the rear side of the flywheel).
6. Lightly coat the outside of the bearing with grease before installing the new bearing. As a mandrel for landing the bearing, an end head is suitable, with a diameter slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the bearing (see accompanying illustration).
7. Reinstall the flywheel (see Engine repair without removal from the car - Civic models). Install the clutch assembly, gearbox and other components removed for access. Tighten all fasteners to the correct torque.
