Examination
1. Check the power supply to the ignition module. Disconnect the wiring from the ICM. With the ignition on (without starting the engine) check for voltage at the following points:
- a) On V6 models, connect a voltmeter between the black/yellow wire terminal (terminal no. 2) and body weight. The device should record the battery voltage;
- b) On 4-cylinder models, remove the cover and slider from the distributor, then disconnect the black-yellow wire from the ICM module and check for voltage between its terminal and ground with the ignition on and the engine not running.
2. Check the condition of the ignition circuit and related components. If there is no voltage at the ICM, check the condition of the wiring in the section of the circuit between the module and the ignition switch (see chapter Onboard electrical equipment). Always check the condition of the ignition switch fuses No. 41 first (for 100 A) and 42 (for 50 A) in the relay/fuse box under the hood. Also check fuse #6 (for 15 A) in the mounting block under the dashboard of the car. Carefully examine the electrical circuit and verify that the ignition switch provides power to the ICM when the key is turned to the ON position. If necessary, refer to the wiring diagrams.
3. Verify that power is being supplied from the ignition coil to the ICM. With the ignition on (do not start the engine) make sure there is voltage between white and black (4-cylinder VTEC engines) /white-blue (4-cylinder engines without VTEC) /blue (V6 engines) wire and body weight. Battery voltage must be present.
4. If there is no voltage, check the circuit in the area between the corresponding wire and the coil. Also check the coil windings (terminals A and B on 4-cylinder engines and terminals 1 and 3 on V6 engines) for internal breaks (see Section Checking the condition and replacing the ignition coil).
5. If the coil and circuit wiring are OK and there is no spark, replace the ICM.
Replacement
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Note. If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Remove the cover from the distributor and (with appropriate equipment) protective screen (see chapter Settings and ongoing maintenance).
3. Disconnect all electrical connectors on the ICM.
4. Remove the two mounting screws from the ICM housing and remove the module by pulling it out.
5. Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
