Examination
1. Check for proper power supply to the ignition module. Disconnect the wiring harness from the ICM. With the ignition on (without starting the engine), check for voltage at the following points:
- a) On V6 models, connect a voltmeter between the black/yellow wire terminal (terminal #2) and body ground. The meter should register battery voltage;
- b) On 4-cylinder models, remove the distributor cap and rotor, then disconnect the black/yellow wire from the ICM and check for voltage between its terminal and ground with the ignition on and the engine not running.
2. Check the condition of the ignition circuit and related components. If there is no voltage at the ICM, check the condition of the wiring in the circuit section between the module and the ignition switch (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment). Always check the ignition switch fuses #41 (100A) and #42 (50A) in the underhood fuse/relay box first. Also check fuse #6 (15A) in the under-dash fuse box. Carefully inspect the electrical circuit and verify that the ignition switch supplies power to the ICM when the key is turned to the ON position. Refer to the wiring diagrams if necessary.
3. Verify proper power supply from ignition coil to ICM. With ignition on (do not start engine), verify voltage is present between the white/black (4-cylinder VTEC engines)/white/blue (4-cylinder non-VTEC engines)/blue (V6 engines) wire and body ground. Battery voltage should be present.
4. If there is no voltage, check the circuit between the appropriate wire and the coil. Also check the coil windings (terminals A and B on 4-cylinder engines and terminals 1 and 3 on V6 engines) for internal opens (see Section Checking the condition and replacing the ignition coil).
5. If the coil and circuit wiring are OK and there is no spark, replace the ICM.
Replacement
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Note: If your car stereo is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
2. Remove the distributor cover and (if equipped) the protective screen (see Chapter Settings and ongoing maintenance).
3. Disconnect all electrical connectors on the ICM.
4. Remove the two screws from the ICM housing and remove the module by pulling it out.

5. Installation is carried out in reverse order.
