Attention! 4WD towing (AWD) models with only the front or rear wheels off the ground can cause the car to make an involuntary turn due to the rotation of the center differential, in addition, such towing significantly increases the load on the differential, which is fraught with premature wear of the internal components of the latter!
As mentioned above, it is best to transport a broken 4WD car with the wheels completely off the ground. When installing the car on the tow truck platform, turn on the first gear (models with manual transmission) /or move the selector lever to the position «R» (models with AT), engage the parking brake and securely attach the safety chains. Make sure that the chains are not too tight, as this will lead to excessive compression of the suspension elements and is fraught with destruction of the latter when shaking while driving. Schemes of unfastening the car on the platform and the permissible angles of stretching the safety chains are shown in the illustrations.
Attention! Transportation of a car with a failed transmission should be carried out only with the wheels completely off the ground on the tow truck platform!
In case of emergency, it is allowed to tow an emergency vehicle without taking off the ground all four wheels.
Make sure the towing vehicle is heavier than the one being towed.
When towing, use only a specially designed towing strap, which is available inexpensively from almost any auto supply store. The sling must only be hooked to the eyelets specially designed for this purpose, which should in no case be confused with safety shackles.
Do not tow emergency vehicles in reverse.
Do not forget to turn the key in the ignition of the towed vehicle to the ON position, otherwise the steering column will inevitably lock. In addition, when the ignition is switched on, the direction indicators and brake lights are also activated.
Remember that when the engine is off, the vehicle's braking performance is noticeably reduced due to the fact that the vacuum brake booster ceases to function. In this case, you should squeeze the foot brake pedal with a slightly greater force than usual. On models equipped with power steering, when maneuvering, more force will also have to be applied to the steering wheel.
The driver of the towed vehicle must try to keep the towing strap taut at all times in order to avoid jerks and collisions with the wheels.
Before driving, the drivers of both vehicles (towing and towed) the itinerary must be agreed upon.
Movement should be carried out only at moderate speeds, along the shortest route and in compliance with traffic rules. Avoid sudden braking, acceleration and maneuvering.
