If the wheels do not turn, it can be assumed that there is a breakdown in the gearbox, so be sure to tow the car with the 4th wheels up or with the front wheels up.
In the case of towing a 4WD vehicle, under no circumstances is partial loading permitted (front or rear wheels only). This could damage the transmission or cause the vehicle to roll off the platform.
Rope towing
Towing with a cable is carried out as follows.
1. Models with automatic transmission.
Measure the fluid level in the automatic transmission.
If the oil level is below the lower limit, either all 4 wheels or the front wheels must be lifted when towing.
2. Open the luggage compartment and remove the tools.
3. Take the jack handle and towing ring from the tool kit.
4. Use the end of the jack handle to open the sunroof.
5. Screw in the towing eye securely.
6. Hook the cable to the towing ring, hang a white rag in the center of the cable.
7. Set the gearshift lever or selector lever to the position «N» (neutral), and turn the ignition key to position «I» or «II».
8. Release the parking brake. When towing, watch the warning lights of the front vehicle and do not allow the towing cable to sag.
9. Models with automatic transmission.
Carry out towing at a speed of less than 30 km/h and a distance of no more than 80 km. If the cable gets under the wheels, it can damage the body, so the following must be done:
- Attach the towing ring securely.
- Do not attach the tow rope anywhere other than the tow eye.
- Do not overload the towing ring.
Instruction. When towing with the engine off, pay attention to the following:
- The vacuum brake booster does not work, so the braking performance is low.
- The power steering does not work, so it is difficult to turn the steering wheel.
- On vehicles with a manual gearbox, the key may fall out of the ignition if it is in the «0», which will cause the steering wheel to lock.
- On a long descent, the brake pads and discs may overheat and brake failure may occur.
Emergency vehicle towing
The weight of the towing vehicle must exceed the weight of the towed vehicle.
When attaching the cable to the towing loop, in order to prevent damage or deformation of the car body or the loop, it is necessary:
- Do not attach the cable to other places than the towing eye.
- Avoid driving that puts more pressure on the towing eye.
- If towing is carried out using a steel cable or chain, wrap a rag around the places where they touch the car body. Failure to do so may damage the bumper.
