Inspection
1. Inspect the locking ring and gear
A. Inspect the inside of the ring for wear.
B. Inspect the synchronizer bushing teeth and corresponding teeth on the synchronizer ring for wear (rounding)
Good
Worn out
C. Inspect the bushing teeth and corresponding teeth on the gear for wear (rounding)
Good
Worn out
D. Inspect the end face of the hub gear for wear.
E. Inspect the tapered surface for wear and scoring.
F. Inspect the teeth on all gears for uneven wear, scratches, scuffs and cracks
2. Apply oil to the bevel surface of the gear and place the synchronizer ring on the mating gear. Rotate the ring to make sure it doesn't slip.
Measure the gap between the locking ring and the gear around the entire circumference.
Note: When measuring the clearance, hold the synchronizer ring evenly on the gear.
Gap between ring and gear
- Standard: 0.73-1.18 mm
- Operating limit: 0.4mm
Gap between double cone synchronizer and gear:
Standard:
- A: (between the outer ring and the cone) 0.5-1.1 mm
- IN: (between cone and gear) 0.5-1.0 mm
- WITH: (outer ring and gear) 0.95-1.68 mm
Operating limits:
- A: 0.3 mm
- H: 0.3mm
- C: 0.6 mm
If the gap is less than the operating limit, replace the synchronizer ring and cone.
