The engine wiring includes short pieces of calibrated wire that act as fuses. The wires - fuses are identified by their color (see Chapter 12). Maintenance intervals for charging system components (belt, battery) is given in Chapter 1.
When the ignition system is turned on, the indicator lights on the dashboard light up and go out after the engine starts. If the charge indicator light does not go out after starting, this indicates a problem with the system (see Section 16). Some models have a voltmeter: if it shows abnormally high or low voltage, check the charging system.
Be careful when working with the car's electrical equipment. Remember the basic rules:
- a) When connecting wires between the generator and the battery, observe the polarity;
- b) when carrying out welding work on the car, disconnect the generator and battery wires;
- c) Never start the engine with the battery charger connected;
- d) when charging the battery, remove both wires belonging to the car;
- d) Use caution when working on a rotating engine;
- e) When steam washing the engine, cover the generator with a plastic bag.
