Inspection
Note: Do not rotate the camshaft during inspection. Remove the rocker arms and rocker shafts.
1. Install the camshaft and camshaft caps onto the cylinder head, and then tighten the bolts to the specified torque.
Nominal torque:
(1)-(10): M8 bolts; M.Z. = 27 Nm
Apply engine oil to threaded parts.
(11)-(14): M6 bolts; M = 9.8 Nm

2. Install the camshaft and move it towards the distributor.
3. Set the digital indicator to zero and rest it against the end of the distributor drive, then move the camshaft forward and backward and determine the amount of axial play.
Axial clearance:
- Nominal value (new): 0.05-0.15 mm
- Limit value: 0.5 mm
4. Remove the bolts, then remove the camshaft covers from the cylinder head.
- Remove the camshaft from the cylinder head, wipe it clean, then inspect the cam lobe surfaces. Replace the camshaft if the cam lobe surfaces are pitted, scratched, or excessively worn.
- Wipe the camshaft bearing surfaces in the cylinder head, then install the camshaft in place.
- Place pieces of plastic gauge along the axis of each neck.
5. Place the camshaft into the cylinder head, then install the camshaft caps and then tighten the bolts to the specified torque in the sequence shown in the figure above.
6. Remove the camshaft caps, then measure the widest part of the plastic gauge on each journal.
Clearance between cover and camshaft:
- Nominal value (new): 0.050-0.089 mm
- Limit value: 0.15 mm
7. If the clearance between the cover and the camshaft is not within the acceptable range and the camshaft has already been replaced, you must replace the cylinder head.
If the camshaft has not been replaced, first check the runout of the camshaft mounted on prisms.
Camshaft runout:
- Nominal value (new): 0.03 mm
- Limit value: 0.04 mm
If the camshaft runout is within acceptable limits, replace the cylinder head.
If the runout is not within the specified limit, replace the camshaft and check again. If the bearing clearance is still not within the specified limit, replace the cylinder head.
8. Check the cam height
Standard cam height (new):
