Steering operation
Set the front wheels straight ahead and measure the distance the steering wheel can be turned with the front wheels stationary.
Backlash: (0-10) mm
If the play exceeds the limit, adjust the steering rack pressure. If the play is still excessive, after adjusting the steering rack pressure, check the steering gear drive and mechanism as described on the next page.
Checking the auxiliary force on a stationary vehicle
1. Check the power steering fluid level and pump belt tension.
2. Start the engine at idle speed, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to warm up the fluid.
3. Attach the dynamometer to the steering wheel. With the engine idling and the car on a clean, dry floor, tension the dynamometer as shown and note the reading when the wheels just begin to turn.
4. The readings should not exceed 29 N (3.0 kgf). If the readings are greater, check the mechanism and the pump.
