This Section is devoted to the procedure for repairing an engine on a car. Information regarding the removal and installation of the engine, repair of the cylinder head and cylinder block can be found in Part B of this Chapter.

Specification, included in that Section of Chapter 2 applies only to the procedures described here. The specification for the block and cylinder head is contained in Part B Chapter 2.
The engines described in this manual can be one of three major modifications. The first modification was produced since 1984 and was equipped with a gasoline injection system or a carburetor. It used two intake and one exhaust valves per cylinder. These engines were usually marked "12 VALVE" on the distributor cap.
The second modification was also equipped with an injection system or a carburetor, but had two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder.
The third modification had one inlet and outlet valve per cylinder. Further, we will call the engines 8, 12 and 16 valve (3, 1 and 2 modifications respectively).
