General information about car engine repair (Honda Civic 3)

This Section is dedicated to the procedure of engine repair on a car. Information on engine removal and installation, cylinder head and cylinder block repair can be found in Parts B of this Chapter.

If the engine is removed from the vehicle, many of the provisions of Section A are no longer applicable.

Specification, included in the specified Section of Chapter 2, applies only to the procedures described therein. The specification for the block and cylinder head is contained in Parts B Chapters 2.

The engines described in this manual can be one of three main modifications. The first modification was produced from 1984 and was equipped with a gasoline injection system or a carburetor. It used two intake and one exhaust valve per cylinder. These engines were usually marked "12 VALVE" on the camshaft cover.

The second modification was also equipped with an injection system or a carburetor, but had two inlet and two outlet valves per cylinder.

The third modification had one intake and exhaust valve per cylinder. From now on we will call the engines 8-, 12- and 16-valve (3, 1 and 2 modifications respectively).
