P0351: Cylinder 1 Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction, Intake Side.

P0353: Cylinder 2 Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction, Intake Side.

P0355: Cylinder 3 Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction, Intake Side.

P0357: Cylinder 4 Ignition Coil Circuit Malfunction, Intake Side.

Note: Before troubleshooting, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot data and review the general troubleshooting instructions.


Information marked with an asterisk (*) applies to rear ignition coils.

1. Turn the ignition on by turning the key to the "ON" (II) position.

2. Clear the DTC using the HDS.

3. Start the engine.

4. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs using the HDS.

Is DTC P0351, P0352*, P0353, P0354*, P0355, P0356*, P0357, and/or P0358* illuminated?
  • YES - go to step 5.
  • NO - Intermittent fault, system is OK at this time. Check ignition coil and ECM terminals for loose connections or connections.

5. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

6. Swap the ignition coil of the cylinder that has the problem with the ignition coil of another cylinder.

7. Start the engine.

8. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs using the HDS.

Is the DTC code displayed in the position of the replaced coil?
  • YES - Replace the faulty ignition coil, then Go to step 25.
  • NO - go to step 9.

9. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

10. Check fuse #11 "IGNITION COIL" 2 (15 A)* and fuse #10 "IGNITION COIL" 1 (15 A) in the relay/fuse box in the engine compartment.

Is the fuse good?
  • YES - go to step 11.
  • NO - go to step 12.

11. Check the ignition coil relay in the under-dash relay/fuse box



Is the relay working properly?
  • YES - go to step 15.
  • NO - Replace the engine compartment fuse/relay box, then go to step 25.

12. Disconnect the 20P (white) connector from the underhood fuse/relay box.

13. Disconnect all 3P ignition coil connectors.

14. Check the continuity of the connection between terminal No.3 of the 3P connector of the ignition coil of cylinder No.1 on the intake side and the body ground.

Is the connection continuous?
  • YES - Repair short in wire between ignition coils and underhood fuse/relay box. Check fuse #11 "IGNITION COIL" 2 (15 A)* and fuse #10 "IGNITION COIL" 1 (15 A), then go to step 25.
  • NO - Replace the engine compartment fuse/relay box, then go to step 25.

15. Reconnect the 20P (white) connector at the underhood fuse/relay box.

16. Disconnect the 3P connector of the ignition coil from the cylinder that has the problem.

17. Turn the ignition on by turning the key to the "ON" (II) position.

18. Measure the voltage between terminal No.3 of the 3P connector of the ignition coil of the faulty cylinder and the body ground (see table).

Is there voltage in the battery?
  • YES - go to step 19.
  • NO - Repair open in the wire between the ignition coil and the underhood fuse/relay box, then go to step 25.

19. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

20. Check the continuity of the connection between terminal No.2 of the 3P connector of the ignition coil of the faulty cylinder and the body ground (see table).

Is the connection continuous?
  • YES - go to step 21.
  • NO - Repair open in wire between ignition coil and G101, then go to step 25.

21. Bypass the SCS circuit with the HDS diagnostic system.

22. Disconnect the 44P connector C of the ECM.

23. Check for continuity between the body ground and the corresponding terminal of the ECM connector of the faulty cylinder (see table).

Is the connection continuous?
  • YES - Repair short in wire between ECM and ignition coil, then Go to step 25.
  • NO - go to step 24.

24. Check for continuity between terminal No.1 of the 3P connector of the corresponding ignition coil and the corresponding terminal of the ECM connector of the faulty cylinder (see table).

Is the connection continuous?
  • YES - go to step 31.
  • NO - Repair open in wire between ECM and ignition coil, then go to step 25.

25. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.

26. Reconnect all connectors and the battery.

27. Turn on the ignition by turning the key to the "ON" (II) position.



28. Reset the ECM using the HDS.

29. Perform the ECM idle mode diagnostic procedure.

30. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs using the HDS.

Are there any Temporary DTCs or DTCs being output?
  • YES - If DTCs P0351, P0352*, P0353, P0354*, P0355, P0356*, P0357, and P0358* are indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil and the ECM, then go to step 1. If other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting step.
  • NO - The troubleshooting procedure is complete.

31. Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or temporarily replace it with a known good ECM.

32. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs using the HDS.

Are any temporary DTCs or DTCs being output?
  • YES - If DTCs P0351, P0352*, P0353, P0354*, P0355, P0356*, P0357, and P0358* are indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at the ignition coil and the ECM, then go to step 1. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, Go to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting step.
  • NO - If the ECM software has been updated, the troubleshooting procedure is complete. If the system is operating properly and the ECM has been replaced, replace the original ECM.
