Note. This Section describes the procedure for measuring the brushes and voltage regulator on Nippondenso generators installed on 4-cylinder models. Regulator replacement on V6 models is done with a Mitsubishi/Delphi alternator.
Remove the generator from the car (see Section Removal and installation of the generator) and transfer it to the workbench.
Brushes
1. Give three fixing nuts and remove a back cover of the generator, also give a fixing nut and remove a terminal insulator.
2. Turn out two screws of fastening of a brush holder.
3. Remove the brush holder from the rear end of the generator.
4. Measure the length of protrusion of each of the brushes from its cartridge in the holder and compare the results of measurements with the requirements of the Specifications. If the protrusion of the brushes is outside the lower limit of the allowable range, replace them.
5. Check the free movement of the brushes in the holder cartridges.
6. When reinstalling the brush holder, press the brushes with a small screwdriver to pass the shaft.
7. Screw in and tighten the fixing screws.
8. Replace the rear cover and securely tighten the three mounting nuts.
9. Replace the terminal insulator and tighten its nut.
10. Install the generator in its regular place (see Section Removal and installation of the generator).
Voltage regulator
1. Follow the procedures in paragraphs 1 to 3 above. Remove the screws securing the regulator to the rear frame of the generator assembly.
2. Remove the regulator from the generator assembly.
3. Installation is carried out in the reverse order.
