Note: This Section describes the procedure for measuring the brushes and voltage regulator on Nippondenso alternators installed on 4-cylinder models. The regulator on V6 models is replaced in conjunction with the Mitsubishi/Delphi alternator.
Remove the alternator from the vehicle (see Section Removal and installation the generator) and transfer it to the workbench.
Brushes

1. Remove the three mounting nuts and remove the rear cover of the generator, also remove the mounting nut and remove the terminal insulator.

2. Remove the two screws securing the brush holder.
3. Remove the brush holder from the rear end of the generator.

4. Measure the length of each brush protruding from its socket in the holder and compare the measurement results with the requirements of the Specifications. If the amount of brush protrusion is outside the lower limit of the permissible range, replace them.
5. Check the freedom of movement of the brushes in the holder chucks.
6. When installing the brush holder in place, press the brushes with a small screwdriver to pass the shaft.
7. Insert and tighten the mounting screws.
8. Replace the back cover and tighten the three mounting nuts securely.
9. Replace the terminal insulator and tighten its mounting nut.
10. Install the generator in its regular place (see Section Removal and installation the generator).
Voltage regulator

1. Perform the procedures described in paragraphs 1 through 3 above. Remove the screws securing the governor to the rear frame of the generator assembly.
2. Remove the regulator from the generator assembly.
3. Installation is carried out in reverse order.
