Removal
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Warning! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
2. Remove the distributor cap with the high-voltage wires connected to it from the cylinder head. Disconnect the wires from their terminals on the cylinder head and its cover (see Chapter Routine maintenance). Do not forget to mark the wires to avoid disruption of the firing order during assembly.
3. Mark and disconnect from the throttle body and cylinder head cover all wires and hoses that interfere with the procedure.
4. Wipe the cover thoroughly to prevent debris from entering the cylinder head/valve assembly.
5. Remove the cylinder head cover mounting bolts - proceed in the reverse order to that shown in the picture (see illustration below).
6. Carefully remove the cover together with the sealing gasket. If the gasket has stuck to the mating surface of the head, tap the cover with a soft-faced hammer to break the sealant layer. Under no circumstances should you attempt to separate the cover by prying it off with a lever inserted between the mating surfaces.
Installation
1. Remove the old gasket, then carefully clean the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and its cover. After scraping off traces of the old sealant and gasket fragments, wipe the surfaces with a rag soaked in acetone.
2. Apply a small amount of RTV sealant to the corners where the head mating surface meets the rocker arm assembly (see accompanying illustration). Wait about five minutes until the sealant begins to polymerize.
Note: Make sure the top layer of sealant has hardened slightly before installing the cover (in conditions of high humidity, the polymerization of the sealant may begin with a slight delay).
3. Insert the cast gasket into the groove around the perimeter of the cover. Place the insulating bushings into the cover, lightly lubricating them with a solution of soapy water. Place the cover on the head, then screw in the mounting bolts and tighten them in the order shown (see accompanying illustration) with the required force (see Specifications). 4. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal. Before connecting the high-voltage wires, make sure that the rubber seals of the spark plugs are securely seated.
