Note. The rear hub is combined with the wheel bearing into a single assembly. The bearing is sealed at the factory and does not require additional lubrication. If the bearing is worn or damaged, the entire hub assembly must be replaced.
1. Loosen the nuts on the appropriate rear wheel. Jack up the back of the car and place it on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
2. Remove the brake drum/caliper with disc (see chapter Brake system).
3. Use a hammer and chisel to remove the dust cover (see accompanying illustration).
4a. Collate hub (spindle) nut (see accompanying illustration), then give it away, remove the thrust washer and wheel hub.
4b. The hub should be removed freely enough, in case of difficulty, use a hammer-based puller with a sliding head (see accompanying illustration).
5. Install new hub assembly and thrust washer. Tighten the new hub nut to the required torque. Don't forget to screw the nut (see accompanying illustration).
6. Replace the dust cover, lightly tapping around the perimeter to secure the fit.
7. Further installation is carried out in the reverse order to the dismantling of the components.
