General information
All models discussed in this manual are equipped with an additional security system (SRS), better known as airbags. Two airbags are included as a must. The system provides additional protection for the driver and front passenger of the car in the event of a severe frontal impact.
The system consists of an SRS unit with a directional g-force sensor, a control sensor, a self-diagnostic circuit and a feedback circuit included in it. The unit is located under the instrument panel, directly in front of the center console. The airbag modules are mounted in the center of the steering wheel and the right side of the vehicle's instrument panel (directly above the storage box).
Operating principle
A prerequisite for the activation of the airbags is the operation of the directional g-force sensor and the control sensor. The operation of the sensors leads to the circuit of the modules and the instantaneous filling of the pillows with gas. In the event of a battery failure, the airbags are activated using the energy generated by the feedback unit built into the SRS unit.
System of self-diagnosis of failures SRS
The SRS self-diagnosis system turns on the warning lamp on the vehicle's instrument panel when the ignition key is turned to the ON position. If the system does not detect any abnormalities, the lamp should go out after approximately 6 seconds. If the indicator lamp does not turn off, or the lamp comes on while the vehicle is moving, then a malfunction has been detected in the SRS system. To check the system and eliminate the cause of the failure, the car should be driven to a service station.
Maintenance of nodes located near SRS components
If it is necessary to remove the steering wheel or service the radio or other components located near the instrument panel, try not to allow the SRS circuit electrical connectors to be disconnected. Never connect any diagnostic equipment to the SRS circuit. ALWAYS DISABLE SRS PRIOR TO SERVICING ALL COMPONENTS NEAR THE AIRBAG (see below).
Disabling the SRS system
Attention! The SRS system must be deactivated every time you perform maintenance procedures for components located near the airbags!
1. Disconnect from the battery at first a negative wire, then positive.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Connect jumper plugs (Red) to airbag connectors (see below).
Driver airbag
1. Remove the access cover located under the airbag module, then remove the red jumper plug (see accompanying illustration).
2. Disconnect the 2-pin connector installed between the airbag module and the cable drum.
3. Insert the jumper plug into the 3-pin connector on the side of the airbag.
Passenger airbag
1. Remove the glove box (see chapter Body).
2. Disconnect the electrical connector located between the passenger airbag module and the SRS main wiring harness. Insert the jumper plug into the socket on the side of the pillow (see accompanying illustration).
SRS activation
1. To activate the SRS system after it has been disabled (for the purpose of performing maintenance procedures on any components), remove the red jumper plugs from the connectors, then restore the original wiring connection (to cable drum and SRS main harness) install the jumper plugs in their holders and replace the access cover/storage box.
2. Turn off the ignition.
3. Connect the battery (positive wire first, then negative).
Removal and installation of airbag modules
1. Turn off the SRS system (see above).
2. Description of the procedure for removing the driver's airbag module is given in Chapter Suspension and steering.
3. To remove the passenger airbag, remove the two fixing screws (see accompanying illustration).
4. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Don't forget to activate the system (see above).
