- If the fuel gauge moves quickly from the minimum position to the maximum position and then returns to the minimum position again, the gauge is working properly. Go to step 2.
- If the fuel gauge pointer does not move correctly, replace the gauge control module (tachometer), and check again.
2. Drain the water from the fuel filter.
3. Start the engine and check its condition.
- If the engine condition is OK, proceed to step 4.
- If the engine condition is not in order, start troubleshooting by their symptoms.
4. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.
5. Disconnect the 2P electrical connector A of the fuel filter water level indicator.

6. Connect terminal No.2 of the 2P connector of the water level indicator in the fuel filter to the body ground using an adapter wire.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the ON (II) position and then check the water indicator in the fuel filter.
- If the water in fuel filter indicator is on, repair the open in the BLK wire between the water in fuel filter sensor and G401. If the wire is good, go to step 8.
- If the water in fuel filter indicator does not illuminate, repair open in the GRN wire between the water in fuel filter sensor and ECM connector 2 terminal #86. If wire is OK, substitute a known-good ECM, then retest. If the fault does not occur with a known-good ECM, replace the removed ECM.
8. Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position.
9. Remove the water level indicator from the fuel filter.
10. Check the movement of the float in the water level indicator in the fuel filter.
- If the float stroke is normal, proceed to step 11.
- If the float does not move correctly, replace the water level indicator in the fuel filter.
11. Connect the 2P connector to the water level indicator in the fuel filter.
12. Turn the ignition on by turning the key to the "ON" (II) position.
13. Move the float of the water level sensor in the fuel filter and then check the water in the fuel filter indicator.
- If the indicator comes on when the float is in the upper position, the water level sensor in the fuel filter is OK.
- If the indicator remains on or off when the float is in any position, replace the fuel filter water level sensor.
