1. The seals are located on both sides of the gearbox housing where the drive shafts enter them. Jack up the car and place it on supports. A sign of oil leakage through the seal is oil drips on the walls of the manual transmission housing directly under the drive shafts.
2. Remove the drive shaft (see Chapter Clutch and drive shafts).
3. Using a pry bar or large flat-head screwdriver, pry the old seal out of its seat in the transmission housing (see accompanying illustration).
4. If you cannot remove the seal with a crowbar or screwdriver, you should use a special puller (ask in car accessories stores).
5. Using a socket head of the appropriate size or a piece of pipe of the appropriate diameter as a mandrel, seat the new seal in its regular place (see accompanying illustration). Make sure that the seal is seated in the socket strictly perpendicularly and to the full depth. Lubricate the seal lips with transmission oil.
Note: The mandrel should only rest against the hard outer edge of the end face of the seal.
6. Install the drive shaft in place - try not to damage the lips of the new seal.
