Warning! Avoid touching the fan blades with your hands, tools, or clothing. To avoid injury or equipment damage, do not start the engine if the fan is faulty. Do not attempt to repair broken impeller blades – replace the entire impeller!
Examination
Note: On models equipped with A/C, there are two fans, one for blowing air over the engine cooling system radiator and one for blowing air over the air conditioning system condenser. The following procedures apply equally to both fans.
1a. To check the proper functioning of the fan drive electric motor, disconnect its wiring connector (see illus.: cooling system). Now, using a jumper wire, connect the fan directly to the battery. If the fan does not start to spin, replace the electric motor.

2. If the motor is OK, check the condition of the fuse and relay (see Chapter On-board electrical equipment), fan switch sensor, fan relay K/V (when equipped accordingly, it is installed in the left front corner of the engine compartment) and connecting electrical wiring of the corresponding circuit.
3. To check the proper functioning of the cooling system fan switch sensor, disconnect its wiring connector (see accompanying illustration), then, using an ohmmeter, check for continuity between the sensor-switch terminals when the engine is cold (there should be no continuity below 88°C). Start the engine, warm it up to normal operating temperature, then turn it off again and check that now (at a coolant temperature above 92÷96°C) there is continuity between the connector terminals. If the check results are negative, replace the sensor-switch. 4. The operation of the air conditioning fan is controlled by the electronic control module (ECM). If the fan does not operate when the A/C is turned on, despite the fact that all the checks described in the previous paragraph give a positive result, check the refrigerant level in the system. ECM diagnostics can be performed in a car service workshop.
Replacement
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Warning! If the car stereo system is equipped with a security code, make sure you have the correct combination to activate the audio system before disconnecting the battery!
2. Set the parking brake and support the rear wheels of the vehicle with wheel chocks. Jack up the front of the vehicle and place it on supports. If so equipped, remove the lower splash shield of the radiator.
3. Using a small screwdriver, insert it into the connector, release the locking tab and disconnect the fan wiring.
4a. Remove the lower fan mounting bolts (see accompanying illustrations).
4b. Integra models have a retainer, Civic models have two rubber pads that fit into holes in the support brackets.
5. Unbolt the upper fan brackets (see accompanying illustration) and the upper supports of the condenser.
6. Carefully remove the fan from the engine compartment (see accompanying illustration).
7. To remove the impeller from the motor shaft, loosen the central nut (see accompanying illustration).
8. To remove the drive motor from the fan casing, unscrew the mounting screws (see accompanying illustration).
