Warning! Avoid touching the fan blades with your hands, tools and clothing. To avoid personal injury or property damage, do not start the engine with a defective fan. Do not attempt to repair broken impeller blades - replace it as an assembly!
Examination
Note. On models equipped with K / V, two fans are provided - one for blowing the radiator of the engine cooling system, and the second for blowing the condenser of the air conditioning system. The procedures described below apply equally to both fans.
1a. To check the correct functioning of the fan drive electric motor, disconnect the connector of its wiring (see illustration: cooling system). Now, using a jumper wire, connect the fan directly to the battery. If the fan does not spin, replace the motor.
1b. Location of the air conditioning fan drive motor wiring connector.
2. If the motor is OK, check the condition of the fuse and relay (see chapter Onboard electrical equipment), fan sensor-switch, fan relay K/V (if equipped, it is installed in the left front corner of the engine compartment) and connecting wiring of the corresponding circuit.
3. To check the functioning of the sensor-switch of the cooling system fan, disconnect the connector of its electrical wiring (see accompanying illustration), then using an ohmmeter, check that there is no continuity between the terminals of the sensor-switch when the engine is cold (below 88°C there should be no conductivity). Start the engine, warm it up to normal operating temperature, then shut it off again and check that the (at coolant temperature above 92÷96°C) conduction between the terminals of the connector takes place. In case of negative results of checks replace the gauge switch. 4. The operation of the air conditioning fan is controlled by the electronic control module (ECM). If the fan does not function when the A/C is turned on, despite the fact that all the checks described in the previous paragraph give a positive result, check the coolant level in the system. ECM diagnostics can be performed in a car service workshop.
Replacement
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
Attention! If the stereo system installed in the car is equipped with a security code, before disconnecting the battery, make sure that you have the correct combination to activate the audio system!
2. Apply the parking brake and chock the rear wheels of the vehicle. Jack up the front of the car and place it on jack stands. If equipped, remove the lower radiator splash screen.
3. Inserting a small screwdriver into the connector, release the locking tab and disconnect the fan wiring.
4a. Remove the bottom fan mounting bolts (see accompanying illustrations).
4b. On Integra models, there is a latch, on Civic models, two rubber pads are placed in the holes in the support brackets.
5. Unbolt the top fan brackets (ov) (see accompanying illustration) and upper condenser supports.
6. Carefully remove the fan from the engine compartment (see accompanying illustration).
7. To remove the impeller from the motor shaft, release the central nut (see accompanying illustration).
8. To remove the drive motor from the fan shroud, remove the mounting screws (see accompanying illustration).
