Parking brake actuator components
1 - Adjusting nut 2 - Equalizer 3 - Bracket 4 - Sensor-switch 5 - Models with rear wheel drum brakes
1. The layout of the parking brake components is shown in the accompanying illustration. Chock the front wheels, loosen the rear wheel nuts, then jack up the rear of the vehicle and place it on jack stands.
2. On models equipped with rear wheel drum brakes, remove the brake drum (s) (see Replacement of shoes of drum brake mechanisms of back wheels).
3. Loosen the adjusting nut on the equalizer assembly (see Parking brake adjustment). Remove intermediate clamps from the cable sheath (see illustration above).
4. On models with rear wheel drum brakes, remove the shoe assembly (see Replacement of shoes of drum brake mechanisms of back wheels) and disconnect the parking brake cable from the actuating lever on the rear shoe (see illustration). Squeeze out the locking tabs on the cable sheath holder and pull the last assembly out of the brake shield.
5. On models with rear wheel disc brakes, to disconnect the cable from the actuating lever, remove the clip and remove the split pin locking pin (see illustration for paragraph 4). The cable sheath is additionally fixed in the bracket with a spring retainer.
6. Loosen the brackets of the intermediate clamps for fastening the parking brake cable to the bottom of the car. Remove the cable, remembering the route of its laying.
Note. It may also be necessary to remove the bolts securing the rear exhaust heat shield.
7. If necessary, remove the second drive cable in the same manner.
8. Installation is carried out in the reverse order. Don't forget to adjust the parking brake actuator.
