Replacing seals (Honda Civic 3)

1. Oil leaks are mainly caused by wear of the drive seals and/or the speedometer drive seal. Replacing these seals is relatively easy, as the repair can be done without removing the gearbox from the car.

2. The drive shaft seals are located on the sides of the box. If you are sure that the seal is leaking, lift the car and place it on stands.

3. Remove the drive shafts (see Chapter 8).

4. Using a screwdriver, carefully pry the seal out of its socket.

5. If you cannot remove the seal with a screwdriver, use a special puller.

6. Using a large deep socket or a suitable piece of pipe, install the new seal. Install the seal carefully and completely.

7. Install the drive shafts. Be careful not to damage the seal.

Speedometer cable and pinion housing

8. The speedometer cable and pinion housing are located on the gearbox housing. Check for oil around the cable housing.

9. Disconnect the speedometer cable from the gearbox.

10. Use a hook to remove the seal.

11. Using a small socket, install the new seal.

12. Install a new rubber ring on the pinion housing and assemble the speedometer cable drive unit.
