«Lost» malfunctions
Term «intermittent fault» means that the system may have been faulty in the past, but checks now show that it is working. If the malfunction indicator («MIL») does not light up on the instrument panel, check for poor connections or loose terminals at all connectors related to the circuit you are troubleshooting. Indicator «MIL» lit up, but then went out: the malfunction may recur intermittently.
Open circuits and short circuits
''Breaking the chain'' and «short circuit» are common terms in electrical engineering. An open circuit means a wire is broken or there is no contact in the connector. A short means accidentally touching a bare wire «masses» or other bare wire. In simple electronic circuits, this usually leads to the fact that some elements of electrical equipment generally stop working. In complex electronic systems (such as ECM computers) this can sometimes mean that the system is working, but not the way it should work.
Fault indicator action «MIL»
For these models, if you turn the ignition key to the «ON» (II), without starting the engine, the malfunction indicator lamp will illuminate for approximately 20 seconds. Then it goes out or flashes 5 times under various conditions. This is the normal operation of the alarm «MIL». This indicates the status of the self-diagnosis of the exhaust gas management systems.
