General information about the emission control system (Honda Civic 3)

In order to prevent emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere and to ensure good economy, emission control systems for harmful components are introduced. They consist of:

• self-diagnostic systems;
• electronic engine control;
• feedback systems;
• exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems;
• exhaust gas (EG) air mixing systems;
• fuel vapor recovery systems;
• crankcase ventilation systems;
• air temperature control systems; catalytic converter of exhaust gases.

The Sections in this Chapter include general descriptions and test procedures that can be performed at home. Remember that most emissions control system failures are due to simple damage to vacuum hoses and loss of electrical connections.

Information on the exhaust gas composition and the vacuum hose connection diagram are provided on plates attached to the engine compartment.

Please note: For Shuttle models between AN...012938 and AM...022844 the plate is not valid if it has hose #27 on it.
