Removal
1. Drain the transmission oil or fluid.
2. Remove the left drive shaft.
3. Remove the guide bolts.
4. Remove the intermediate shaft from the differential.
Caution: Keep the countershaft horizontal until it is free from the differential to prevent damage to the differential seal.
Disassembly
Note: Be careful not to damage the metal rings on the intermediate shaft during disassembly.
1. Remove the retaining ring.
2. Remove the outer intermediate shaft seal from the bearing support.
4. Press out the intermediate shaft from the shaft bearing using the special tool and press as indicated.
5. Remove the inner retaining ring.
6. Press the intermediate shaft bearing out of the support using a special press.
Assembly
Note:
- Clean the disassembled parts with solvent and dry them thoroughly with compressed air.
- Be careful not to damage the metal rings on the intermediate shaft during assembly.
1. Press the intermediate shaft bearing into the support using the special tool and press as shown.
2. Install the inner snap ring into the groove in the bearing support.
3. Press the intermediate shaft into the bearing support using a special tool and a press.
4.Install the outer snap ring into the groove in the intermediate shaft.
5. Install the outer seal into the bearing support using the special tool as shown.
Note: Install the seal flush with the bearing support.
6. Install a new snap ring into the groove of the intermediate shaft.
Installation
1. Install the intermediate shaft assembly into the differential.
Caution: Keep the intermediate shaft level to prevent damage to the differential seal.
Note: Thoroughly clean the area where the countershaft contacts the transmission (differential), solvent or carburetor cleaner and dry with compressed air.
Install the three guide bolts, then tighten them.
